Trips to Mount Etna from Taormina access the southern flank via Rifugio Sapienza at 1,920 metres, where the cable car departs for Torre del Filosofo at 2,500 metres. The funivia system, rebuilt in 2004 after lava flows destroyed earlier infrastructure, operates daily from 08:30 and carries passengers above pine forests into the barren lunar zone where only Etna violets and astragalus survive. Accessibility varies with volcanic alert levels. During quiescent periods, guided treks reach inactive summit craters, but explosive phases close the upper mountain entirely. The funivia operates year-round except during high winds or ash emissions, and winter snow can blanket the summit zone from December through March. Morning departures from Taormina align with the 08:30 cable car opening, allowing ascent before afternoon cloud cover obscures crater views and thermal inversions trap volcanic gases at mid-elevation.
